KATMANDU, Nepal — Soldiers rescued about 600 students who were abducted from their classrooms in western Nepal in a series of bold strikes by communist rebels, army officials said Sunday.

The rebels - who claim to be inspired by Chinese revolutionary Mao Zedong - have fought since 1996 to overthrow Nepal's constitutional monarchy and replace it with a communist state.
