Authorities have closed the underground transport system in Palma, capital of the Spanish holiday island of Majorca, for an indefinite period five months after its inauguration because of repeated flooding, press reports said on Tuesday.
Regional transport minister Gabriel Vicens said the underground, which links the city centre and the local university with a single line of 7.2 kilometres, would remain closed until a solution was found to its "serious structural and design problems."
....Water has entered platforms and tracks, reaching a height of up to 2.5 metres.
The underground, which cost about EUR 130 million, was one of the most expensive infrastructure projects ever carried out on the Balearic Island.
It was to place Palma into the select group of Spanish cities having undergrounds, which include Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia and Bilbao.
